According to the sources; Hội An was a prosperous trading port from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries; Portuguese, English, French, Japanese and Chinese merchants came here to trade, with the majority of them being Japanese and Chinese. A particularly advantageous geographical location on the international commerce route as well as Lord Nguyễn's preferential policies of foreign trade helped many merchants, especially the Chinese to quickly become rich, so some of them built their own houses as well as community structures.

The annual event "Hội An - Japan Cultural Exchange " will take place at Hội An ancient town , F-rom Aug.23 to Aug.25, 2013. The festival is in the frame of “Vietnam – Japan Friendship Year” as well as the 40th anniversary of Vietnam and Japan diplomatic relations (1973-2013).
