Information Nguyên Tiêu Festival 2026 in Hội An - A National intangible Cultural Heritage

The Nguyên Tiêu Festival, also known as the First Full Moon Festival, marks the first full moon of the lunar year. In folk belief, it is regarded as the day of “Heavenly Blessings Bestowed” and for generations, the people of Hội An have considered it the “Tết after Tết” - a meaningful moment that ushers in a year of harmony, prosperity, and good fortune.
From March 2 to 4, 2026, the Hội An Ancient Town will host the Nguyên Tiêu Festival - recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, one of the most distinctive traditional celebrations of the Ancient Town in the early days of the lunar new year. Amid the joyful atmosphere of early spring, solemn traditional rituals will be held at Guan Gong Temple, Guanyin Temple, the Chinese Assembly Halls, communal houses, ancestral halls, and various historical sites within and around the Ancient Town. Ceremonies such as the Nguyên Tiêu offering ritual, the commemoration of founding ancestors, and incense offerings for peace and prosperity embody the Vietnamese moral tradition of gratitude and remembrance, preserving the spiritual continuity of Hội An’s community across centuries. More than an important religious observance for residents, the festival also offers visitors an opportunity to experience the profound cultural depth and spiritual life of a World Cultural Heritage Town and UNESCO Creative Town.
The incense offering ceremony and festive procession will take place at 8:30 AM on March 4, 2026 at Hội An Communal House (No. 27 Lê Lợi Street) and Guan Gong Temple (No. 24 Trần Phú Street) - Hội An Ward. The ceremony will feature solemn activities imbued with traditional local cultural identity and heartfelt wishes for luck, prosperity, and peace in the lunar new year.
The “Re-enactment of Hội An Ancient Town in the Early 20th Century”, held on the evening of March 2, 2026, will bring visitors back in time to old Hội An, where flickering candlelight, warm lantern glows, flowing Áo Dài, and the tranquil rhythm of life blend harmoniously with poetry, music, and art echoing through the streets.
Throughout the festival, traditional cultural and artistic activities such as Tuồng (classical opera) performances, Bài Chòi folk games, photo exhibitions on the Nguyên Tiêu Festival, along with prayer rituals and traditional customs in neighborhoods and villages, will further enliven the festive atmosphere unique to Hội An. The Ancient Town will shimmer under the spring moonlight and vibrant lantern colors, creating an experience that is both sacred and poetic for residents and visitors alike.
The Nguyên Tiêu Festival in Hội An is not merely a celebration, but a vivid expression of a living heritage town, where tangible and intangible cultural values are preserved within the very rhythm of community life. In the context of integration and sustainable tourism development, the festival continues to affirm Hội An’s distinctive identity: serene yet radiant, traditional yet continually creative. It serves both as a spiritual anchor for residents and as a unique cultural rendezvous for friends from near and far.
Hội An warmly welcomes residents and visitors to join and immerse themselves in the rich cultural space of the Nguyên Tiêu Festival - the first full moon season of the year in this heritage land.
