Hội An legendary night - preserving and spreading traditional values

The event “Reenactment of Hội An Legendary Night in the Early 20th Century” (commonly known as Hội An Legendary Night) is held on the 14th night of each lunar month. It aims to gradually revive the traditional scenes and activities of old Hội An in today’s modern context, raise public awareness, and inspire community involvement in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. It also serves to enhance the appeal and value of the tourism destination “Hội An Ancient Town”.
Over time, Hội An has undergone numerous transitions, yet it has consistently preserved its distinctive identity, as evident in its ancient architecture, close-knit community lifestyle, and rich cultural heritage. Most of the activities during the Legendary Night are lovingly curated and performed by local community groups, who bring passion and dedication to every performance. Notable contributors include family music ensembles, the “Melodies of Time” group, the “Echoes of the Past” group, classical Tang poetry clubs, traditional poetry groups, village and xiangqi (Chinese chess) players, traditional martial arts clubs, and Tuồng (classical opera) performers. Other engaging activities include folk games like bài chòi, folk singing classes, and traditional instrumental ensemble performances.
During the event, the usual electric lights and daily hustle of the town will temporarily give way to a more mystical and romantic atmosphere, softly illuminated by candles and colorful lanterns. The town takes on a more peaceful mood, allowing visitors to fully absorb the sounds of footsteps on old streets, oars gliding through the water, lovers whispering, and the sweet melodies of Quảng Nam’s folk songs drifting through the night.
Hội An Legendary Night is not only a captivating experience of both tangible and intangible heritage, but also a living testament to the transmission of cultural values across generations. It offers a meaningful occasion for both locals and visitors to reflect on, appreciate, and celebrate the enduring legacies that have shaped Hội An - a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
With strong commitment from the new local government and community, especially in the context of the recent administrative merger of Quảng Nam Province and Đà Nẵng City, the continued enhancement of Hội An Legendary Night reflects shared aspirations to safeguard and further develop local cultural values.
