Hội An - The pioneer land of green tourism

The Visit Vietnam Year 2022 in Quảng Nam with the message “Quảng Nam - Green tourism destination” has clearly demonstrated the tourism development orientation of Hội An. So, what exactly is green tourism? What is the core that must be done?
Green tourism is centered on environmental protection, human health, and the reduction of hazardous waste in the surrounding environment. This is also the path of sustainable development, as the environment is under great strain from rubbish and hazardous emissions caused by production and industrial development needs. Climate change is getting worse and worse. Global warming is causing the ice to melt. The pandemic is in full swing. The “death” is analogous to the darkness that would descend upon humanity if green solutions to save the planet are not implemented.

The actual situation in Hội An during peak tourist season, particularly in the ancient town, was that the tourist city was overwhelmed with waste.
Hội An can completely become a green tourism destination in the future.
Hội An is the province's first choice to build a green tourism model based on a set of green tourism criteria, as a foundation for many other localities to learn and replicate.
Because Hội An is orienting to develop green tourism based on three foundations: Persistently preserving and enhancing cultural heritage, embellishing natural resources, and making efforts to protect the environment; Ensuring community participation, sharing responsibilities and benefits from tourism to the community; Being a high-quality destination that ensures long-term values to meet the needs of sustainable development.
Aside from the ancient town, Hội An has green destinations such as Cù Lao Chàm World Biosphere Reserve, pristine beaches that have been voted the most beautiful beaches in Asia for many years, Bảy Mẫu nipa palm forest, and eco-tourism space in river areas in Cẩm Thanh, Cẩm Kim, and Thanh Hà.
Hội An also promotes community-based tourism with ecological villages and traditional occupation villages, as well as agricultural tourism such as Trà Quế vegetable village, Thanh Hà pottery village, Kim Bồng carpentry village, and Cẩm An fishing village.
“Hội An green tourism would diversify types of Quảng Nam tourism as well as world cultural tourism in Hội An and Mỹ Sơn”, said Mr. Phùng Tấn Đông.
Mr. Võ Phùng, Vice Chairman of Quảng Nam Tourism Association, stated “It can be argued that this is our country's first plan, and Hội An is very fortunate to be chosen as a pilot. Green tourism is highly relevant to the current context, that is, after the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourists and residents all expect sustainable, friendly and safe tourism products.”
The collaboration of tourists and locals, in particular, is important in creating a green tourist destination.
Do you think you'll be on your way to Hội An with a backpack containing a personal water bottle, a cloth bag, a stainless steel spoon, and a stainless steel straw? To begin your Green Tourism journey, you can use environmentally friendly or reusable products.
Hotels, restaurants, and stores in Hội An embark on choosing ecologically friendly and safe products and solutions. Residents of Chàm Islands have long abandoned plastic bags in favor of shopping baskets, paper bags, reusable plastic boxes, and other alternatives.
The Quảng Nam Green Tourism Criteria Set was developed with the assistance of the Swiss Sustainable Tourism Program (SSTP) as part of the action program of the Visit Vietnam Year - Quảng Nam 2022, referring to the criteria of 25 international criteria sets and adjusting to match local practices. The set of criteria includes 6 areas for types: hotels, homestays, eco-resorts, community-based destinations, travel and attractions.
We hope you just capture wonderful photos and leave your footprints on our peaceful land. And let's take action to bring GREEN to Hội An, a World Cultural Heritage site.
