Hoi An has been regarded as one of the most attractive destination in the world thanks to its ecological environment with many activities close to nature, beautiful landscapes, folk games and traditional festivals.

In an attempt to operate the light and sound system with environmentally friendly energy sources and to take advantage of the abundance and stable distribution of sunlight, the city of Hoi An has implemented the project “Installing solar power system to lightup decorative lanterns and operate the sound system in Hoi An Ancient Town” since 2016 under the support of Wernigerode and German government.
On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Hoi An, Vietnam and Wernigerode, Germany (2013 - 2018), the solar power system inauguration ceremony will be officially held at 18:00 on February 8th 2018 at An Hoi Sculpture Garden, Hoi An city. Particularly, Hoi An city will be honored by the presence of the German Ambassador, German Consul General, representatives of Wernigerode city and distinguished guests at the event.
The total investment in the solar power system installation project is €170,934; of which 90% is funded by German government and  and the rest is from Hoi An’s and Wernigerode’s corresponding capitals.
The solar power system which is installed at Song Hoai Square is expected to produce power equivalent to 55kWp It will be used for the following activities: street art performance, folk games, folk music class, choral music class, sound and light system in the ancient town, etc. The excess energy will be stored in the automatic battery system which can be used at night time or in bad weather condition.
Especially, on this occasion, the two cities will join hand to hold the German Beer Day which is scheduled to take place from 15:30 to 21:30, February 8th to 10th 2018 at An Hoi Sculpture Garden; with famous beer brands, German and Hoi An traditional food and the performances of singer Rainer Hochmuth, Webster and Syml band from Wernigerode city, Germany.
The success of the project does not stop at promoting the cooperative relationship between Hoi An and Wernigerode. It also encourages the local community to use renewable energy sources.
This project greatly contributes to the efforts in limiting the effects of climate change and develop sustainable tourism in Hoi An.
